Black Beauty Icons

Black Lives Matter. Black women all over the world have impacted the beauty industry and we would not be where we are today without them. Below are some badass black women through the decades.

Josephine Baker 1920's

Talk about an OG beauty icon, Josephine was working in France during the Jazz age and sparked the beauty industry with thin brows, bold eyes and the legendary banana skirt. She even later acted as a French Resistance agent and refused to perform in segregated American theaters. Bad Ass.

Dorothy Dandridge 1950's

This beauty exudes 1950's style by donning short, sassy curls and a sexy red lip. Dorothy was the first African American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress.

Diana Ross 1960's

Diana Ross has never ceased to stun us with her legendary looks. Full and spiky lashes and big voluminous curls became a signature for her.

Grace Jones 1970's

Queen of the Disco scene! Grace was a model and actress associated with Studio 54's Disco scene and was never afraid to get outside the box. She often played with different shaped eyebrows, vivid lip colors, and loads of blush.

Naomi Campbell 1990's

Talk about a beauty icon, Naomi has given us every look under the sun - from pencil thin eyebrows and larger than life lashes, to natural glowing skin and beautiful braids, the now 50 year old supermodel will never stop serving us looks.

Lupita Nyong'o 2000's

Lupita empowers young girls all over the country to embrace their natural hair. She never misses an opportunity to play with bright colors as well. If you don't know who this is, maybe seeing her in Star Wars or Black Panther will jog your memory.

Alicia Keys 2010's

This babe just stopped wearing makeup one day and has just been radiating ever since. Alicia has tried more styles than we can count and has never let us down!

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to learn about some of the amazing women in beauty and fashion. Black women have been making waves and changing our scope of beauty for hundreds of years and they should be celebrated each and every day. If you are in the beauty community or just curious yourself, I encourage you to dig into the history and see how these women, and many more, have shaped the trends we see today and shaped the world.
