Must Have Setting Sprays from a Pro MUA
I know there’s two schools of thought when it comes to makeup; one says settings mists do nothing for your makeup and the other says they make all the difference. You can be the judge of your own journey with setting sprays and whether they work or not. In my opinion, they do, and i’ll never stop spraying my clients faces with at least one of these incredible mists. So, if you want to know which ones to bust the setting mist myths with, then keep reading.
Or, they’re all linked here for you!
#1 Morphe Continuous Mist (Gold bottle)
She’s ranked #1 because this is my most used setting spray. I love love love this setting spray to lock in my cream products and melt any powders into them during the makeup process. I use this mist during my application to add bounce and hydration back into the skin. And, the fact that the ‘pump’ is a light-weight continuous mist should be all you need to know. Plus, it’s pretty cost effective for a jumbo can (6+ oz) at $26.
#2 One Size On ‘til Dawn Setting Spray
This one has been viral for months and I think everyone has probably bought this already or had an artist use this spray on them. The proof is in the proofs, literally—she’s waterproof, transferproof, smudgeproof, and sweatproof for 16hrs. I love using this spray to end my application with and lock everything together. This mist isn’t as gentle as the Morphe spray and feels a little sticky at first. I like to compliment it as like hairspray for the face!
#4 Anastasia Beverly Hills Impeccable Blurring Matte Setting Mist
This is another new setting spray on the market that quickly earned a spot in my professional kit. The Impeccable Mist is a 24hr mattifying spray that locks in makeup with a skin-like finish. I love that they say it has a velvety skin like finish to it, because it does. It mattifys the skin without draining the life out of it! Perfect for makeup under heavy lighting and on camera. I used this today for my male clients that were in a commercial.
#5 REFY Beauty Face Setter Hydrating & Plumping Spray
I feel like this spray is a bit underrated and not because it’s not holding it’s own next to the giants. But I think thats the problem, for $28 you only get 1.69 oz of products which is very little compared to the other sprays I mentioned. However, this one does live up to every claim made. It does hydrate and visibly give the skin plumpness with skin care crafted ingredients. It does a fantastic job of locking in makeup through VA/VP copolymers, which is a fancy science girl way of saying that it creates a film like layer over the skin to reduce the effect of humidity and locks your makeup in place. And, its an ultra fine mist that doesn’t leave those pesky droplets on your face. All in all, still 5 stars.
** Honorable Mentions **
Although I don’t carry these in my professional kit, I did want to mention:
This is a cult classic that will never not get the job done! It has stood the test of time and competes alongside all these new greats. She’s a true prep and set mist with properties that melt your powders into your creams and then set it and forget it for the rest of the day!
A fixing spray is slightly different than a setting spray in the essence that fixing sprays typically create a layer over the makeup to create durability while setting sprays blend and melt makeup together. These fixing sprays contain a lot of alcohol and polymers to create that film layer over the makeup look. This is a great spray for pageants, special effects work, prosthetic makeup, drag, and other stage performances. Personally, the can is too big for me to carry around and my bridal clients typically like to keep the skin feeling light and soft.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk—just kidding, but I do feel like I could talk about this for hours! So, if you’ve tried any of these and love (or hate) any of them, let’s chat about it!
